UP: 2 newborn babies die of extreme cold as air conditioner of nursery 'run by a quack' left unattended overnight

In Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli, an unlicensed medical practitioner was booked and subsequently after two newborn babies died in her clinic due to extreme cold, as the air conditioner was left unattended overnight. These infants, born to different families at the Kairana government hospital on September 23, were advised by a doctor to be transferred to Neetu Kumar’s private clinic, operated by the 38-year-old practitioner on the same day. Mohammad Najim, the father of one of the victims, claimed that “Neetu and her staff members set the AC at a low temperature and then went to sleep.” The next morning, both babies were discovered lifeless in the nursery when their parents went to check on them. Outraged families protested and demanded strict action. Amardeep Maurya, the Circle officer, stated, “Following complaints from the children’s families, a case has been filed against Neetu under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 304 (causing death by negligence), 419 (punishment for cheating by impersonation), and 420 (cheating), at the Kairana police station.” Dr. Vinod Kumar, the Additional Chief Medical Officer in Shamli, revealed during the investigation that Neetu was operating without a license or a medical degree. “The clinic has been shut down, and Neetu faces charges under section 15 (2 and 3) of the Indian Medical Council Act (1956),” Kumar stated.
