Guwahati: United National Liberation Front of Manipur today said that the recent capital punishment awarded by a Bangladesh court in absentia to Ulfa (I) ‘commander-in-chief’ Paresh Barua was ‘unjust’.
“The recent verdict is a hasty action of Sheikh Hasina led Bangladesh government as a part of its India appeasement policy,” UNLF’s self-styled senior publicity officer Ksh Yoiheiba said in a statement e-mailed to PTI in Guwahati.
He said that Bangladesh must not forget the hospitality of the people of Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura toward refugees from the neighbouring country during the Liberation war.
The email said that the UNLF condemned the ‘unjust’ verdict and pledged its support to the appeal made by ULFA(I) to the Bangladesh government to reconsider and withdraw it.
Barua was sentenced to death in absentia along with 14 others by a Bangladesh court on 30 January for the seizure of 10-truckloads of weapons in Chittagong on 2 April 2004.
