Parliament Budget Session Day 1 LIVE Updates: President Murmu hails 'Aatmanirbharta' in defence

In a nod to the government’s Aatmanirbharta initiative in defence, President Murmu’s speech mentioned the commissioning of two indigenously built warships– INS Nilgiri and INS Surat– and one submarine– INS Vaghsheer– by the Indian Navy in one go earlier this month.

She hailed the progress made by setting up of the defence industrial complexes in India.

“The country has taken several historic steps to protect the country’s borders and ensure internal security….The govt has also taken steps towards self-reliance in the defence sector. From Make in India, we have moved to make for the world…”

The industry swiftly reacted to her mention of defence indigenisation in the speech. “India’s defence sector has grown significantly under ‘Make in India,’ with a strong push for indigenisation and exports. The Economic Survey highlights the need for greater private-sector participation, MSME growth, and a shift from component exports to full-scale defence platforms…The Economic Survey also stresses the importance of public-private partnerships, dedicated R&D funding, and boosting India’s shipbuilding and aerospace sectors to strengthen self-reliance and global competitiveness,” said Ashish Kansal, CEO of defence manufacturing firm SMPP.

Economic Survey 2024-25: One thing India needs to avoid a Greece and Italy-like pension crisis

The Economic Survey 2024-25 warned that India needs to steer clear of entering a pension crisis like those in Greece and Italy.

The 480-page document has highlighted that India needs a pension system that is designed to be both sustainable and scalable based on its unique demography and labour market.

The survey said, the traditional “Pay-As-You-Go” (PAYGO) schemes do not ensure that funding from the younger workforce that pays pensions to retirees changes with a change in demography.

Inflation also plays a crucial role– small differences in how pensions are adjusted for inflation can lead to significant variations in payments over time.

Budget Session 2025 Live Updates: Economic Survey spotlights unsecured personal loans

The Economic Survey 2024-25 flagged unsecured credit in the form of personal loans and credit cards as an area of concern within the banking system. The document tabled in the Parliament on Friday said that over half (51.9 per cent) of the fresh addition to the stock of non-performing assets (NPAs) in the retail loan portfolio emanated from the slippages in the unsecured loan book.

“The RBI FSR (December 2024) notes that nearly half of borrowers with credit card and personal loans also have another active retail loan, often substantial, such as a housing or vehicle loan. When a borrower defaults on any loan category, financial institutions classify all loans of that borrower as non-performing. Hence, their larger, secured loans face delinquency risks due to defaults in smaller personal loans,” the document said.

Economic Survey says India needs 8% growth to become Viksit Bharat by 2047

“To realise its economic aspirations of becoming Viksit Bharat by the time of the centenary of independence, India needs to achieve a growth rate of around 8 per cent at constant prices, on average, for about a decade or two. While the desirability of this growth rate is unquestionable, it’s important to recognise that the global environment – political and economic – will influence India’s growth outcomes,” the Economic Survey document stated.

India needs to create 78.5 lakh jobs in non-farm sector by 2030: CEA V Anantha Nageswaran

“India is a majorly services driven economy, with a significant share of the IT. Workforce is employed in low-value added services, which are most susceptible to automation, as firms to cut costs may substitute labour for technology,” Chief Economic Advisor of India V Anantha Nageswaran said while speaking to the press.

He pointed out that India is a consumption-based economy. A fall in consumption, resulting from the displacement of workforce, is bound to have macroeconomic implications. If the worst-case plays out, it can send growth trajectory off course.
