Under-construction bridge collapses in Shillong, one dead, 16 injured

Shillong: A public works department engineer was killed and 16 labourers injured when an under-construction bridge collapsed at Kolmesalgre village in Williamnagar area of East Garo Hills district today. An official with the district administration said junior engineer, PWD (Roads), Lemingson Marak, who was due to retire from service next year, was killed on the spot when the bridge crashed on him.[caption id=“attachment_942807” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Representational image. PTI[/caption] Most of the labourers have sustained fracture injuries but nobody was critical, the sources said, adding that some of them were taken to Tura Hospital in West Garo hills district. It appears that a slab that was being cast since Monday was on a weak support structure leading to the collapse, the official said. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to probe the causes that led to the incident, the official said. PTI
