Apart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a host of central ministers and leaders and chief ministers of several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled states would attend the swearing-in-ceremony of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and his Council of Ministers.

BJP’s Tripura unit vice president Subal Bhowmik told IANS that Amit Shah, BJP’s national general secretary Ram Madhav, general secretary (organisation) Ajay Jamwal and Assam minister and Tripura election-in-charge Himanta Biswa Sarma, among other leaders, “held a series of meetings with the state leaders to select the ministers, assembly Speaker, Deputy Speaker and other important functionaries”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Friday attend the swearing-in ceremony of chief minister-elect Biplab Deb in Tripura, official sources said.

The swearing-in will also mark the BJP taking over the reins of the state for the first time. The BJP alliance in the northeastern state has won 43 out of the 60 assembly seats, ending nearly 25 years of the Left rule in Tripura.

Left Front convenor Bijan Dhar said that since the declaration of Assembly election results on Saturday, around 400 offices of the Left parties and frontal organisations were attacked, 85 party offices burnt down, 315 offices of various Left parties and frontal organisations were forcibly occupied, 1,704 houses belonging to Left members and supporters attacked and around 200 houses set on fire.

He claimed that 290 shops owned by Left members and supporters were burnt down, 10 rubber gardens destroyed, over 600 Left members and supporters assaulted badly, 10 vehicles damaged. This had forced thousands of persons to take refuge elsewhere in the state. – IANS

The Left Front leaders will boycott the swearing-in of the BJP-led government spearheaded by Biplab Kumar Deb on Friday to protest “large-scale violence” in Tripura after the Assembly elections, Left leaders said on Thursday.

However, outgoing Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and elected leaders of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) will attend the ceremony, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah would be present.

The newest chief minister-to be Biplab Deb Kumar has had a deep-rooted interest in RSS. Born in 1969 and raised in Tripura, he trained under top RSS leaders for 15 years in Delhi, after completing his college education, according to  NDTV . Two years ago he was sent back to Tripura and given the task of building a strong base for the RSS and BJP in the Left bastion state. He is fondly known as “Big B” to his supporters.

An unusual visitor knocked on the doors of four-time chief minister of Tripura Manik Sarkar. BJP national secretary Ram Madhav called on the outgoing chief minister after he moved out of the official residence and moved into the CPM office in Agartala. 

Ram Madhav and Chief Minister-elect Biplab Kumar Deb made a rare visit to the CPM party office that is going to be Sarkar’s home to invite him to Deb’s swearing-in ceremony. Madhav tweeted about this later, “Called on former CM of Tripura Sh Manik Sarkar at d CPM office and invited him to d oath ceremony of d new govt tomorrow. True to his character he has shifted to d party office immediately after resigning as CM post the election. Something for leaders to emulate.”

Manik Sarkar might shift to govt quarter if allocated by BJP govt

CPM office secretary Haripada Das said Manik Sarkar had asserted that he would “eat what is cooked in the party office kitchen”. “He has already sent packets of books and clothes and some CDs to the party office. Sarkar might shift to a government quarter if he is allocated one by the new government,” Das said.

Sarkar’s wife also told PTI that she would be donating Marxist literature and books to the party office library and the Birchandra Central library in the city.

Manik Sarkar to make CPM office his new home

Outgoing Chief Minister Manik Sarkar will be shifting to his new residence — the CPM state committee office after BJP’s Biplab Kumar Deb swears in as the new chief minister today.

Sarkar, who has ruled the state for 20 years, is in the process of checking out of his official residence on Marx-Engels Sarani, about 500 metres from his new home, CPI(M) state party secretary Bijan Dhar told reporters.

“He would be moving into the party office in a few hours. Sarkar would be living in one room of the party office guest house with his wife Panchali Bhattacharya,” he said.

Speaking to NDTV ahead of taking charge of Tripura, Biplab Deb said, “People inspire me…they are my dal, roti (staple).” Deb has also assured the people of Tripura of development, something which ‘wasn’t done by the previous government’.

Deb said, “I love the people of Tripura. I even love the Communist and Manik Sarkar, but I am annoyed that they got so much time but didn’t utilise the resources of the state to develop it. We will rebuild it from scratch.”
