Trains cancelled, schools shut as heavy rains wreak havoc in Telangana & Andhra Pradesh

Heavy rains damage railway track in Telangana. X

Heavy rains battered the state of Telangana, leading to the closure of all primary and secondary schools in Hyderabad along with severe damage to a railway track. Several trains had to be cancelled after the railway track between Kesamudram and Mahabubaba was damaged due to the rains. Amid the chaos, Telangana’s Transport and Backward Classes (BC) Welfare Minister Poonam Prabhakar met with the stranded passengers at Kazipet Junction in Hanumakonda on Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad district collector announced the closure of schools as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students as heavy rainfall continued on Monday.

“Due to the forecast of heavy rains in Hyderabad District, all primary and secondary schools, under all managements (government, aided, and Private), are hereby declared a holiday on Monday, 02-09-2024, as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the children,” the District Collector said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

In Khammam, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu visited flood-affected areas and relief shelters that were created in his constituency. He also directed officials to make necessary arrangements for flood victims. On Sunday, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy ordered all the government departments to remain on high alert after the water flow of Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad increased at an alarmingly high rate.

“Red warnings have been issued for today and tomorrow in Telangana. East and Northeast districts are under red warnings, while north and south districts have been issued orange warnings for the same period. All districts are under heavy rainfall warnings. GHMC is expected to see moderate to heavy rains at times. Hyderabad is under an orange warning for today and tomorrow,” Dr K Nagaratnam, Director of the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre said, on Sunday.

He mentioned that the state may witness light to moderate rainfall over the next three days. Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka also conducted an on-site inspection of flood-affected areas in Errupalem Mandal in Madhira Constituency.

PM Modi assures Centre’s help for Telangana & Andhra Pradesh

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana CM Revanth Reddy about the situation in both states. During the talks, the PM assured all possible assistance from the Centre to overcome the challenge. " Prime Minister @narendramodi called Chief Minister @revanth_anumula. He inquired about the rains and flood conditions in the state and the details of the damage. The Chief Minister brought to the attention of the Prime Minister the basic details of the heavy rain and flood damage in many districts," Telangana CM’s office wrote on X.

“The Chief Minister informed the Prime Minister that the state government has taken precautions to avoid any loss of life and inconvenience to the people, immediate relief measures have been taken, and Khammam district has suffered most of the damage.”

“The Prime Minister assured that help will be provided on behalf of the Central Government and helicopters will be sent to Telangana to provide services even in adverse weather conditions. Modi congratulated the Telangana state government administration for acting vigilantly to prevent loss of life,” the CMO added.
