Tragedy on Mumbai-Pune Expressway: Six college students killed in car accident

Just days after a couple died in a tragic accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, six college students lost their lives in another accident on Monday. The driver of their car allegedly tried to overtake another vehicle and lost control, reported The Times Of India. The car turned turtle near Kashmet on the expressway. Image courtesy: News18[/caption] The group was on its way to Pune in their Maruti Ciaz car when it brushed the side of another vehicle, resulting in the accident at 3 am. All the deceased youths were students of Sinhgad College of Engineering and resided in Pune, reported News18.  According to DNA, five of them have been identified as Aditya Bhandarkar, Yash Shirali, Abhishek Roy, Akshay Bhilare and Jacky Samuel. The Indian Express quoted Inspector IS Patil of Kamshet police as saying that preliminary investigation suggests the car was travelling at a very high speed and the driver lost control. Three of the students died on the spot while two died on the way to hospital. According to The Times Of India, the sixth student who was being treated at Lokmanya Hospital at Ningdi, has also passed away. There has been a rise in accidents occuring the Mumbai-Pune Expressway with Hindustan Times reporting last month the tragic death of a Mumbai executive and his wife. News18 in June reported another accident were 17 people lost their lives after a bus fell in to a ditch. _Firstpost_ had reported earlier that 14,500 accidents have been reported since Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s construction in 2002. Interestingly, India has also witnessed a surge in road accidents with 2015 recording highest number of road accidents.
