TN court issues notice to Google over pornographic content

A Tamil Nadu additional district court has issued notices to internet major Google Inc, its subsidiary YouTube and the central government’s Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, based on a complaint alleging that the search engine provides links to pornographic websites even as one searches for neutral topics. According to a report by The Times of India, a software engineer from Tamil Nadu, Ashok Kumar complained after a recent incident where he was trying to search for ‘Hotmail’ on the search engine. Reuters[/caption] Kumar said, “As soon as I typed HOT, the search engine started showing links to abusive contents and pornographic videos. Even at my home, several children are using the internet for completing home work and online-competitive tests. They will be misguided by the search suggestions leading to abusive content.” His advocate cited the example of China, which has been successful in removing obscene content from Google and insisted that the search engine must adhere to the local values and laws. Notices will be served to the internet giant soon and the next hearing of the case will be on 7 June.
