Telangana tragedy: 19 dead after gravel-laden truck collides with bus in Rangareddy district

At least 19 people were killed and several others injured after a gravel-laden truck collided with an RTC bus near Chevella in Telangana.

At least 19 people lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries after a truck carrying gravel rammed into a Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (RTC) bus near Mirjaguda in Chevella mandal of Rangareddy district on Monday.

According to Chevella ACP B Kishan, the RTC bus had departed from Tandur and was en route to Chevella when the accident occurred. “The truck was carrying a load of gravel. As of now, we can confirm that 16 people, including the truck driver and several bus passengers, died in the accident,” he said.

Rajendranagar DCP Yogesh Goutam stated that the truck was in the right lane when it hit the bus. “We have to verify whether the crash happened while the truck driver was overtaking or driving in the wrong direction,” he added. At the time of the collision, 40 passengers were travelling in the bus, and the gravel load from the truck fell onto them after the impact. The accident took place on the Bijapur highway, leading to traffic being diverted on both sides while rescue teams worked to extract the victims and move the injured to hospitals.

CM orders relief measures; officials rush to accident site

The Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy took to X and expressed deep grief over the tragedy and directed officials to reach the spot immediately and carry out necessary relief operations. The Chief Minister instructed the Chief Secretary and the DGP to ensure that all injured passengers were shifted to Hyderabad for advanced medical treatment. He also directed the ministers available nearby to visit the site without delay.

Telangana IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu expressed shock over the incident and said he had alerted the district collector, police officials, and senior officers of concerned departments. He demanded a detailed report on the cause of the accident and the condition of the injured. The minister directed officials to personally oversee rescue and relief efforts and instructed medical authorities at Chevella Government Hospital to provide the best possible treatment.

He held a teleconference with senior officials to review the ongoing operations and assured them that the government stood firmly with the victims and their families. He also ordered that information regarding each injured person be promptly conveyed to their relatives.

Chevella Police confirmed that the collision occurred between a TGSRTC bus and a truck near Khanapur Gate under Chevella police station limits early in the morning. “Several passengers are injured, and more details will be provided later,” police officials said.
