Hollywood actor Robert De Niro has finally replied to the questionnaire emailed to him by the Goa Police five months ago in the case where Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal is accused of raping his younger colleague.
Sources have told The Indian Express that De Niro's attorneys, in their reply to the investigating authorities, have confirmed that the woman was accompanying him at the festival in Goa.
An email response routed through the office of the actor’s attorneys Harvey & Hackett, New York, to the police’s detailed questionnaire has confirmed that the woman journalist was De Niro’s liaison at the event.
She was given the responsibility of chaperoning De Niro and his daughter Drena on all three days of the event at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Goa.
The Oscar award winning actor's name featured prominently in the first information report (FIR) filed in the case.
"Let's go wake up Bob (Mr. De Niro) and I asked him why he wanted to do that. I then realized that Mr Tejpal was simply pressing buttons on the lift's panel to make the elevator stay in circuit, preventing it from stopping anywhere, and for the doors to open," the FIR filed in November said, quoted an excerpt from the complaint written by the victim and sent to the magazine's then managing editor Shoma Chaudhury.
Last week, a Goa court asked the government to hand over unedited portion of CCTV footage of the area near a lift in a hotel to Tejpal. He sought the footage of the area in the starred hotel for a time period from 7 November, 2013 when the crime was alleged to have happened till 29 November, when he was arrested.
His lawyers had maintained that the proof of Tejpal's "innocence" lies in the footage which was procured by the investigating agency.
