In a major boost for the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ project of the Indian government, Swedish defence giant Saab has begun building a manufacturing plant in Jhajjar, Haryana, that would produce Carl Gustaf M4 guns.
According to a statement issued on Monday, the manufacturing facility is being constructed at Reliance Industries Ltd’s wholly-owned subsidiary MET City Jhajjar. Saab hopes to start producing the much renowned Carl Gustaf M4 rifles at the location by next year.
Saab is noteworthy for being the first defence company to receive government clearance for 100% foreign direct investment (FDI).
“I am proud to start constructing our first facility outside Sweden for Carl-Gustaf, a product that has a long history with the Indian Armed Forces. We look forward to starting production of our excellent product, now engineered and made in India”, said Görgen Johansson, Senior Vice President and Head of Saab’s business area Dynamics.
According to the press announcement, Saab will collaborate with Indian suppliers and completely adhere to the “Make in India” standards for the systems produced at the plant. According to the release, Saab plans to utilize sophisticated technologies at the new plant, such as cutting-edge sighting technology and sophisticated carbon fiber winding, to produce Carl-Gustaf M4 for the Indian military forces as well as parts that might be used in other users’ systems.
The primary shoulder-launched weapon in the Indian Armed Forces is the Carl-Gustaf system, which has been in use by the Indian Army since 1976.
