New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, was discharged from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Aiims), 10 days after she underwent a kidney transplant at the premier hospital. The authorities said that Swaraj was recuperating steadily and was fit enough to observe postoperative care at home. Doctors decided to discharge her after all her latest biochemical tests were found normal including kidney function. “Sushma Swaraj has been discharged from Hospital at 7 pm after her postoperative uneventful recovery following kidney transplant operation on December 10,” the AIIMS said in a statement. “A team of doctors will continue to review Swaraj’s progress over next several weeks,” AIIMS Director MC Misra said expressing happiness over her recovery. It further said necessary detailed advice has been given pertaining to her nutrition and diet, physiotherapy and fluid intake. 64-year-old Swaraj has been advised to restrict visitors for next three months at home and office to minimise the chances of infection. However, the minister has been known to discharge her duties and issue prompt responses to distressed Indians on twitter even while in hospital . Swaraj, underwent a kidney transplant at Aiims hospital in New Delhi on 10 December, with the organ being harvested from a living unrelated donor, following which her health has been improving steadily. According to sources at Aiims, Swaraj underwent a nearly six-hour-long surgery which was conducted at the cardio-thoracic centre by a team of 50 personnel including transplant surgeons, transplant anaesthesiologists, nurses, technicians and other supporting staff. The team comprised Mishra, surgeons VK Bansal and V Seenu, nephrologist Sandeep Mahajan and Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) chief Balram Airan among others. Swaraj has been suffering from diabetes for quite sometime and after it was found that she had renal failure, she was put on maintenance dialysis. The Union minister, who has been in and out of the hospital for the last few months, was admitted to Aiims on 7 November. Earlier she was admitted to Aiims in April for treatment of pneumonia and other health issues. With inputs from agencies
