Supreme Court turns down plea for intervention in FTII imbroglio

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea for judicial intervention to end the logjam at the Film and Television Institute (FTII) of India, Pune. [caption id=“attachment_2423900” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]  Image courtesy: AFP[/caption] A public interest litigation seeking the intervention of the apex court into the ongoing standoff between the students and the institute authorities was filed by an advocate named Vineet Dhanda, The Times of India reported last week. The petitioner is said to have contended that the situation was affecting the careers of the students and has brought disrepute to the institute. The Indian Express has reported that the strike by the FTI students has entered its 88th day, and that the students have refused to take back their protest challenging the appointment of chairman Gajendra Chauhan. The students have claimed that Chauhan lacks “credentials” and “vision” for the post. This comes even as a contract faculty member from Assam has begun a fast seeking immediate resolution of the imbroglio. With inputs from PTI
