The Gujarat High Court on Friday scrapped the two judge panel, headed by Justice (retd) Sugnya Bhatt, formed to probe into allegations of snooping on a woman by the Gujarat government and Narendra Modi. According to NDTV reports, the high court scrapped the panel after the father of the woman in question filed a petition saying it was a private matter. The panel was formed by the then Modi government in Gujarat in November 2013. It was also supposed to probe BJP president Amit Shah’s (then Home Minister) involvement in the issue. AFP[/caption] Former Additional Chief Secretary KC Kapoor was the other member the Inquiry Commission, which was supposed to submit its report within three months. The scandal came to light when two portals, Cobrapost and Gulail, released the tapes of purported conversation between IAS officer GL Singhal and Shah. The tapes alleged Shah, at the behest of his ‘saheb’ (not identified), asked the police officer to snoop on the young woman. When the panel’s term ended in February it was given a three-month extension (till May 31) to submit findings. Later, the state government gave a second extension of one month up to 30 June. The Congress-led UPA government, too, had announced a probe into the “snoopgate” affair, but did not name a judge to head the inquiry. The BJP had strongly opposed the controversial move by the then Manmohan Singh government and had demanded that the probe be stopped as a parallel inquiry had been ordered into the matter by Gujarat government. The UPA government’s decision to set up the inquiry triggered a political row as the ‘Snoopgate’ affair was alleged to have involved Modi when he was the Gujarat Chief Minister. With agency inputs
