Amid heightened tensions with Pakistan, the BJP-led central government has increased the security of External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, news agency ANI reported, citing sources. His convoy will now include an additional bulletproof vehicle.
Jaishankar, who receives ‘Z’ category security from the CRPF, will now have an extra security vehicle for his nationwide movements, sources said.
The decision, according to ANI, comes following a fresh threat assessment conducted amid India-Pakistan border tensions after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which led to a brief but intense conflict between the two countries.
The threat evaluation flagged increased risk levels for senior Indian officials involved in national security and foreign policy.
EAM Jaishankar already has ‘Z’ category security, with 33 CRPF commandos providing round-the-clock protection.
This latest move follows an earlier upgrade in October 2024, when Jaishankar’s security was elevated from ‘Y’ to ‘Z’ category.
The security enhancement comes in the backdrop of recent India-Pakistan tensions, which escalated into a brief military clash before a ceasefire was reached. The escalation followed Operation Sindoor — precision strikes by India on terror hubs at nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
In retaliation, Pakistan targeted Indian civilian and military sites with drones and missiles on 7 May. A ceasefire was agreed upon on 10 May after Pakistan’s DGMO contacted his Indian counterpart.
