 "Security alert issued in Manipur amid intel on influx of 900 Kuki rebels from Myanmar")
A major security alert was issued in the state of Manipur following the confirmation of an intelligence input that over 900 Kuki militants from Myanmar have infiltrated villages in the Imphal valley.
According to the Times of India, the intel stated that the militants are planning to launch coordinated attacks on villages in the Imphal valley around September 28.
Kuldeep Singh, security adviser to the BJP-led government said on Friday that until the intelligence report is proven wrong, the authorities are acting based on it. “Unless and until it is proved wrong, we believe that it is 100% correct”, Security Adviser to Manipur Kuldeep Singh said, confirming the intelligence report.
The report noted that grouped units of 30 members each are currently spread across the peripheries of the state and are expected to launch multiple coordinated attacks on villages which house the Meiteis.
A major security concern
The latest security alert came a day after the Indian Army recovered a large cache of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the hilly regions of Imphal East district while conducting a joint operation with the Manipur police.
The operation was conducted near the villages of Bongjang and Itham, preventing a potentially devastating threat to life and property. During the Friday briefing, Sinch said that security agencies in Manipur have not put in place Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the use of drones in the state.
The security adviser maintained that districts and border units of Manipur Police & Assam Rifles were on maximum alert. “DMs have been alerted and asked to check stocks of explosives with licensed owners. All connected roads and villages within a 5km radius of the hills are also being checked for stockpiles,” Singh said.
