Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer is the only person to have been arrested in the Kolkata rape and murder case.

The Sealdah court on Monday sentenced Sanjoy Roy to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict.

Roy was held guilty under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Judge Anirban Das of the Sealdah additional district and sessions court ordered the state to pay ₹17 lakh in compensation to the family of the RG Kar doctor in the rape and murder case.

“Sanjay Roy you were told that you are guilty, the CBI advocated for a death penalty. However, this is not the rarest of rare cases," the court said.

“No death penalty, only life imprisonment, because death took place that’s why life imprisonment. Rs 10 lakh he has to give to the victim’s family," judge Das said.

However, the victim’s father refused to accept Rs 10 lakh from the accused and said he only wanted justice. In response, Judge Das said, “This is statutory, which is why I have ordered the accused to pay the amount to you."

‘I have been framed’: Roy

In response to the judge, the accused Roy claimed he was innocent and had been framed.
“I haven’t done anything; I have been framed. They didn’t let me speak, tortured me, and forced me to sign many documents,” Roy said.
