New Delhi: The government on Wednesday announced a judicial commission to probe the gangrape of a woman in a bus here and any police lapses and to suggest ways to make Delhi safer for women. The probe panel will be led by retired Delhi High Court judge Usha Mehra, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said after a cabinet meeting. The report is to be submitted in three months, he said. Finance Minister Chidambaram announced the setting up of Commission of Inquiry that will probe the Delhi gangrape case, and will look into any lapses of police. “The commission shall go into various aspects of the rape and assault,” he said. The announcement comes 10 days after a bunch of men raped and tortued a 23-year-old woman in a bus and dumped her after some 40 minutes along with her male friend who too was badly beaten up. The matter is under investigation,” he said. Chidambaram said that if there is a post mortem report in the Tomar incident, it has not been shared with the government so far. Chidambaram said that the government can only offer prayers to the girl’s family now and hope that she will recover. “That it happened in the national capital of the country is a matter of concern. Steps are being taken to find solutions to find a problem plaguing all urban centres and the country at large,” he said. “Whatever we do now is only intended to show govt’s serious intent in the matter that we will apprehend and punish perpetrators,” he added. Chidambaram also said that the government is open to suggestions of what more needs to be done especially from women who feel insecure. With inputs from IANS
