During the inauguration on April 28, 2022, which was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tata expressed his heartfelt commitment to improving healthcare in Assam, stating, “I want to spend my last years helping to make Assam a state that is recognised by all.” His dedication to health and wellness resonated deeply with the people of Assam, showcasing his genuine concern for their well-being.

Economic empowerment through a semiconductor facility

In addition to healthcare, Tata’s legacy in Assam includes significant investments in technology. The establishment of a Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor manufacturing facility in Jagiroad stands as a landmark achievement. In February this year, the Tata Group announced that the Government of India approved a proposal by Tata Electronics to build a state-of-the-art, greenfield semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad. This Rs27,000-crore facility is expected to generate over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region.

Tata remarked on X that “the Tata group will make Assam a major player in sophisticated semiconductors.”

The facility’s foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Modi, reflecting the collaborative effort between the Tata Group and the Assam government. Chief Minister Sarma emphasised the transformative potential of this project, stating that it would place Assam on the global map and empower local youth through skill development programs, including courses in artificial intelligence and electronics.

Chief Minister Sarma expressed gratitude on X, thanking Ratan Tata for his insights and investment: “Thank you so much, Shri @RNTata2000 ji, for your valuable insights, gracious hospitality, and above all, your confidence in a #ViksitAssam.”

Promoting education and community development

Tata’s commitment to Assam extended to education and community development through the establishment of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Guwahati campus. The Government of Assam invited TISS to set up a campus in 2008, recognising the need for quality education that addresses the region’s unique challenges.

The Guwahati campus has been instrumental in contributing to the development sector in Northeast India by offering well-conceived programmes focussed on community organisation and development practices. The foundation stone for the campus was laid in 2010 in the presence of Ratan Tata, symbolising his dedication to education and social upliftment in Assam.
