The Bhartiya Janata Party has won 10 out of 15 Rajya Sabha seats across three states on Tuesday amid cross-voting. The BJP secured 8 seats in Uttar Pradesh while Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party managed to win 2 seats.
The ruling Congress in Karnataka has secured three seats and the BJP one in the Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka on Tuesday. Congress candidates Ajay Maken, G C Chandrasekhar and Syed Naseer Hussain were elected to the Upper House besides Narayansa K Bhandage of the BJP.
. In a major jolt for the Congress which has 40 MLAs in the 68-member state assembly, BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan on Tuesday won the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh, defeating ruling Abhishek Manu Singhvi amid cross-voting, officials said.
The contest was tied at 34-34 votes, after which Mahajan was declared the winner by draw of lots, they said. The result made it clear that nine MLAs voted in favour of the BJP which was confident that Congress MLAs would exercise a ‘conscience vote’.At present, the BJP has 25 MLAs in the state assembly.
