Mumbai: Maharashtra Congress tonight said that it would continue its protest until the Union Government rolls back the railway fare hike entirely.

Tomorrow’s ‘Rail Roko’ agitation in the state will take place as announced, the party said.

Narendra Modi government was trying to salvage itself by taking “unsubstantial” decision of partial roll-back only due to the pressure created by Congress, state Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said.

In a partial rollback, the Railways today announced that the recent hike of 14.2 percent in passenger fares will not apply to second class suburban journey upto 80 kms.

“The government has done a partial roll-back. Our agitations have succeeded. This will bring some relief to 55 lakh Mumbaikars and train travellers across the country. The government should introduce better facilities for travellers than increasing fares mindlessly. The Railway Minister’s bluff of blaming the fare-rise on the UPA government has also been exposed with this rollback,” said Krishna Hegde, MLA and spokesperson of Mumbai Congress in a statement.
