Protests ebb after constable's death; girl's condition improves

The week-long anti-rape protests by students in New Delhi, have calmed down following the death of police constable Subhash Tomar. On Tuesday, constable Subash Tomar was laid to rest with full state honours. He was injured in clashes with protestors and succumbed to his injuries. Bus stops and metro stations in central Delhi remained cordoned off for the third consecutive day on Tuesday. However, later last evening, sensing the mood, the administration decided to open all the metro stations. [caption id=“attachment_569057” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]  Protests at India gate. PTI[/caption] The Delhi Police have booked eight people in constable Tomar’s case, which includes a member of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party. However, Kejriwal hit out at the government and the Delhi Police saying he was being framed for the death of constable Subhash Tomar. Kejriwal said, “There is not a single proof that the government has and they are only framing these youths.” Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has sought a “high-level independent enquiry” against senior police officials for allegedly interfering when the gangrape victim’s statement was recorded. The chief minister made the appeal to Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, to whose ministry Delhi Police reports. The Delhi Police, however, have denied the allegation. The rape victim’s health condition has improved, but she still remains on ventilator support. Doctors said on Tuesday that the ventilator support was slowly being reduced and that the 23-year old rape survivor was doing much better then as compared to Monday. They said she was alert and able to communicate through hand gestures.
