'Nari Shakti': President Murmu nominates Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murty to Rajya Sabha

President Droupadi Murmu nominated renowned author, philanthropist, and the chairperson of Infosys Foundation Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his delight over the announcement and said Sudha Murty’s presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, “exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny.”

Wishing Sudha Murty a fruitful Parliamentary tenure, PM Modi said: “Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring.”

Sudha Murty, wife of Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy, is also the chairperson of the Murty Trust and has authored several books. She was also awarded the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan in 2023.

Sudha Murty has a net-worth of Rs 700 crore of her own. Recently at a television show, Narayan Murthy revealed that his wife has not bought a new saree in 30 years.

Murty also revealed in the show that she and her husband have not taken any vacation for over 30 years.

“We were unable to take vacations for 30 years after we founded Infosys because my husband was constantly preoccupied with work. He used to spend 220 days a year on tour. I never expected any household help from him," Sudha Murty said.

A prolific writer in English and Kannada, author and philanthropist, Murty began her career as an engineer with TELCO (now Tata Motors).

Born in 1950 in Shiggaon, Haveri District in North Karnataka, Sudha Murty completed her engineering from BVB College of Engineering, where she obtained first rank across all branches. She even received a gold medal from the Institute of Engineers.

Studying in a Kannada-language school till class 10, she developed strong ties with the language, leading her to establish more than 60,000 libraries in Karnataka.
