Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tribute to noted freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai on his 149th birth anniversary, saying he was a unique personality ahead of his time.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tribute to noted freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai on his 149th birth anniversary, saying he was a unique personality ahead of his time.

"Punjab Kesari Lala Lajpat Rai was a unique personality who was ahead of his time. I salute this proud son of India on his birth anniversary," Modi tweeted.

The Punjabi author and freedom fighter was popularly known as 'Punjab Kesari' and 'Sher-E-Punjab' meaning The Lion of Punjab.

He died in 1928 after he sustained serious injuries when police used force during a non-violent protest against the Simon Commission.
