PM Modi holds talks with US President Biden, discusses Ukraine & Bangladesh situation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held talks over telephone with US President Joe Biden.

The two leaders discussed global and regional issues, including the situations in Ukraine and Bangladesh, said Modi in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Modi said that he reiterated to Biden India’s full support for early return of peace and stability in Ukraine.

The conversation between the two leaders took place shortly after Modi’s visit to Ukraine and at a time when Bangladesh is in the grips of a political crisis. Following the ouster of premier Sheikh Hasina in a mass movement, the unelected regime of Mohamed Yunus propped by the military and anti-Hasina political groups has failed to maintain law and order. The anti-Hasina forces have unleashed a wave of violence against Hindus and other minorities and political rivals.

About the situation in Bangladesh, Modi said, “We also discussed the situation in Bangladesh and stressed on the need for early restoration of normalcy, and ensuring the safety and security of minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh.”

There was no immediate readout from the Ministry of External Affairs or the Prime Minister’s Office or from the White House.

Earlier in the day, Modi held a conversation with PM Anthony Albanese of Australia, a fellow member of the Quad grouping along with the United States and Japan.
