After rousing the crowd in Bihar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a rally in West Bengal’s Coochbehar where he touched upon a range of issues and highlighted the shortcomings of the Opposition ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

From launching attacks at the ruling party Trinamool Congress (TMC) to reiterating ‘Modi ki Guarantee,’ here are five key takeaways from the prime minister’s speech in Coochbehar:

1. In the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, PM Modi emphasised why it is important for the Bhartiya Janata Party to win the maximum number of seats in West Bengal.

“It is important for Bengal’s development that the BJP wins. BJP will put an end to the atrocities that the women face in Bengal. The entire country has seen how the TMC fought tooth and nail to save the culprits of the Sandeshkhali incident,” Modi said.

2. Underlining the signs of progress made by the saffron party in the past 10 years, Modi said, “Modi cares for your future and your future generations. It is because Modi’s intentions are pure that… Jammu and Kashmir finally got rid of Article 370. Women got reservations in legislatures. After 500 years, Ram Mandir was built in Ayodhya.”

He added, “‘Modi ki Guarantee’ begins from where expectations from everyone else end.”

3. Recalling one of his rallies in West Bengal during the last election campaign in 2019, the prime minister said, “I want to thank Mamata didi because when I came here in 2019, she created hindrance in my rally. I had said to her that the public would seek my revenge… But today, she did not try to do any such thing and let me meet you all. I thank the Bengal govt for not creating any trouble today.”

4. Modi said that after India attained independence from British rule, the people of the country were only aware of the “Congress Model” of governance, but now the world is praising him for being a strong leader who makes big changes.

“The world says that Modi is a strong leader who makes big decisions… to those, I’d like to say that I am merely a servant of my people. I make big decisions so that the aspirations of 140 crore Indians can be fulfilled,” PM Modi said.

He added, “For decades, Congress gave the empty slogan of ‘Garibi Hatao’, while Modi actually uplifted 25 crore people out of poverty in 10 years.”

5. Slamming opposition parties including TMC, Communist Party and Congress, the prime minister said, “TMC, Leftists and Congress might look like rebels, but behind the curtains, they are all partners. A huge amount of money has been found in the houses of TMC leaders. Under the guise of ‘giving jobs’, they loot people. I say ‘remove corruption’, they say ‘save the corrupt leaders’.”
