An Air India plane with 242 passengers onboard crashed in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad on Thursday (June 12), confirmed Gujarat’s State Police Control Room.

Civil hospital sources confirmed 170 deaths in the incident, which occurred within five minutes of the take-off.

The incident, involving an Ahmedabad to London Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flight, reportedly happened as the plane attempted takeoff.

Thick plumes of smoke from the crash site were visible as far as Vastrapur, prompting panic in surrounding areas.

Emergency services were rushed to the spot.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in a statement said it was dispatching its three teams to the crash site.

“Three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, comprising 90 personnel, have been moved from Gandhinagar to the plane crash site. A total of three more teams are being moved from Vadodara,” the NDRF said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken to the Gujarat Chief Minister, Home Minister and the Police Commissioner regarding the plane crash. He also assured to provide Central government assistance.

Air India issues statement

Air India in a statement confirmed the incident.

“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on our X handle,” the statement reads.

Flightradar24 also said that it received the last signal from the aircraft seconds after it took off.

‘“The aircraft involved is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration VT-ANB,” it said.
