Parliament Security Breach: 8 personnel suspended from Lok Sabha for 13 December safety lapse

The Lok Sabha Secretariat Thursday suspended a total of eight personnel for security lapses on 13 December, 2023 when two people jumped into the chamber of the Lower House from the public gallery during Zero Hour, released yellow gas from canisters and shouted slogans before being overpowered by the MPs. Sources told News18, the eight personnel have been suspended for dereliction of duty on Wednesday. Those suspended have been identified as Rampal, Arvind, Vir Das, Ganesh, Anil, Pradeep, Vimitt and Narendra. The major security breach occurred on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack. The duo was identified as Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D. Around the same time, two other accused – Amol Shinde and Neelam Devi – also sprayed coloured gas from canisters while shouting “tanashahi nahi chalegi” outside Parliament premises. Sagar, Manoranjan, Amol and Neelam were detained and are now in police custody. Their accomplice Vishal, in whose house the accused stayed before reaching Parliament, has been detained from Haryana’s Gurugram while a hunt is on for their other accomplice Lalit. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has registered a case under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against those detained for the Parliament security breach. The officials said the case has been registered under IPC sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 452 (trespass), 153 (wantonly giving provocation, with intent to cause riot), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and UAPA sections 16 and 18 at the Parliament Street police station. Opposition create ruckus in Lok Sabha The Winter Session in the Lok Sabha resumed Thursday, but had to be adjourned till 2 pm minutes after as members of the Opposition disrupted the House by raising slogans demanding a statement from the government on the issue of Parliament security breach. Speaker Om Birla said the security of the Parliament complex is the responsibility of the Lok Sabha Secretariat. “It is our jurisdiction,” he asserted. The slogans were raised during the Question Hour. “All have condemned it. We need to be careful…we should not give passes to those who create disturbances,” Union minister Rajnath Singh told the House. In the old building too, incidents of throwing paper and “jumping” have taken place, he said.

There is no need to create disturbance in the House, Singh said. With inputs from agencies
