Mamata to scan, approve replies to parliamentary questions, says official

Amid reports that her government’s departments do not send answers to parliamentary questions on time, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has decided to scan and approve all such replies filed by additional chief secretaries, principal secretaries among others before they are submitted, a senior official said.

Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi, in a message, has directed the secretaries to send him the replies, which then would be forwarded to the CM for a final nod, the official said on Friday.

“It has come to the government’s notice that replies to the parliamentary questions are not always processed in time. Henceforth, the additional chief secretaries, joint secretaries, secretaries have been asked to submit their replies to the chief secretary.

‘Kisan sansad’ near Parliament enters 2nd day

The ‘Kisan sansad’, being held at Jantar Mantar near Parliament where the Monsoon Session is underway, entered its second day on Friday. Paramilitary forces and police personnel have been deployed at the site with heavy barricading at the entrance to avoid any kind of untoward incident. The protest by the farmers was peaceful.

The farmers started ‘kisan sansad’ (farmers’ parliament) with speaker Hardev Arshi, deputy speaker Jagtar Singh Bajwa and the agriculture minister.

The sansad had a one-hour question hour where questions were thrown at the agriculture minister who tried his best to defend the Centre’s new agriculture laws.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra brings privilege motion against IT minister

According to News18, a notice of a question of privilege under Rule 223, 226, and 227 of Rules of Procedures and Conduct of Business was moved by TMC MP Mahua Moitra in Lok Sabha against IT minister Ashwini Vaishnav for making false statements before the Parliament of India.

Rajya Sabha adjourned within mins of reassembling

Post lunch break, the Rajya Sabha reassembled at 2:30. Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge sought a discussion on Pegasus snooping issue as per notice given by him. Deputy. Leader of RS Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi however said the statement was already made by the IT minister after the issue was raised earlier. “We have also seen the behaviour that minister faced,” he said. Finally, the Chair adjourned House until Monday.

Rahul accuses PM of treason, demands SC appointed probe into Pegasus issue

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah used the Pegasus spyware against India, its institutions and its democracy, and “the only word for this is treason”, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged on Friday. He also said that every phone he uses is tapped.

The former Congress president demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the matter and also the home minister’s resignation.

“Pegasus is classified by the Israeli state as a weapon and that weapon is supposed to be used against terrorists. The prime minister and the home minister have used this weapon against the Indian state and our institutions. They have used it politically, they have used it in Karnataka..,” Gandhi told reporters.

“The only word for this is treason…,” he said.

Indian government in talks with Pfizer: Health minister says in LS

An expert group of the Indian govt is still in talks with Pfizer over COVID vaccine supply, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said in the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, MoS (Health) Bharti Pravin Pawar said in the Lok Sabha that a total of Rs 9725.15 crore have been spent so far on the COVID-19 vaccination programme, including procurement of vaccines and operational cost for vaccination.

“A total of 135 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine are expected to be available between August 2021 to December 2021,” she said, adding that there has been no delay in entering into purchase agreements with the domestic vaccine manufacturers.

Rajya Sabha adjourned till 2.30 pm

Rajya Sabha was adjourned within a minute of reconvening at 12 pm amid ruckus by the Opposition over Pegasus snooping and TMC MP Santanu Sen’s suspension from the House.

“As you (Sen) know that a resolution has been passed to suspend you from attending the proceedings till the end of the Monsoon session, we request you to leave the House,” Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha Harivansh said before adjourning the House.

The House will reconvene at 2.30 pm, when Private Member Bills will be taken up. Among the Bills listed today is the ‘Uniform Civil Code in India Bill’.

TMC MP Shantanu Sen suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remaining part of the session.The government had brought a motion of suspension against the MP after he snatched papers from Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday and tore them on the floor of the House. 

Sen had, however, alleged that Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri abused him in the House and was on the verge of physically assaulting him before he was rescued by colleagues. Sen claimed at a news conference that Puri even rudely gesticulated at him. There was no reaction yet from the minister on the issue

BJP issues whip to all RS MPs

The Bharatiya Janata Party has issued a whip to all its Rajya Sabha MPs to be present in the House. This comes amid speculations that the government will move a motion seeking suspension of Trinamool Congress MP Shantanu Sen for snatching papers from Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Sources said some opposition MPs “misbehaved” with the treasury bench members, including a minister, even after the House was adjourned.
