Only in India: Rooster fails to post bail, sent to jail

In Sabbavaram, Andhra Pradesh, authorities seem to have encountered a bizarre issue, which has resulted in a rooster going to jail, much to the police’s dismay.

The cops, working on a tip-off, conducted a raid and arrested nine people, plus–the rooster. Booked for cockfighting, the owners and the bird were produced before a local court, then Hindu  reported .

While, the owners managed to post bail, the lack of a lawyer and the inability to cough up the bail bond seems to have landed the rooster in a bit of a… ahem… soup.

Unlike a certain Mr Kejriwal, the rooster hasn’t tried to peck the system in submission, not yet anyway. Awaiting its day in court, the bird has been taken into custody until the next hearing.

All said and done, the rooster was doing what it had been asked to do by its master. Yet the poor bird languishes in jail. The days in lock-up aren’t without respite: as the bird awaits its moment in court, the police have allowed it to wander outside during the day, only to ensure it’s back inside in time by sundown. Such travesty of justice.
