Srinagar: One policeman was killed and two policemen injured as a fierce gun battle broke out between security forces and militants in Sopore town of north Kashmir today. The police said it launched an anti-militancy operation in Chanakhan area of Sopore, 55 kms from here, with assistance of the army following information about presence of militants in the area. Reuters[/caption] As the security forces were closing on a house where the militants were hiding, the ultras opened indiscriminate firing on them, a police official said. This is the first strike by militants in 2014. An Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of police, Kafeel Ahmed, was critically injured in the attack and succumbed to his injuries. The injured were rushed to Srinagar for treatment. The area was cordoned off and additional security forces rushed to prevent the militants from escaping.
