One dead in accident at site of under construction submarine in Vishakhapatnam

One dead in accident at site of under construction submarine in Vishakhapatnam

The Indian Navy’s run of tragedy continued with the death of a civilian subcontracted worker at the site of an under-construction submarine of the Arihant class at the ship building centre of the Eastern Naval Command in Vishakhapatnam on Saturday.

The accident occurred when the [pressure of the hydraulic tank of the submarine was being tested . The lid of the tank reportedly fell on the workers, according to information from the Defence Reaearch Development Organisation.

DRDO chief Avinash Chander said one worker “unfortunately lost his life”. The deceasedworker was identified as Amar, 24. Two others sustained serious injuries.

Chander said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

This is the 12th incident involving naval assets in service in the recent past or which are expected to join the Navy in near future.

There have been 11 accidents involving Indian Navy ships and submarines since last August. While most of the accidents did not claim any lives, 21 officers and sailors have died in three mishaps.
