Five individuals have created an open source map that highlights flooded streets in Chennai, to help users report and avoid unsafe routes.

While Chennai is battling with torrential downpour, helping the citizens is a website that gives an overview of the areas that are flooded in the city . Through open source web portal, Github, five individuals, Arun Ganesh, Prasanna V Loganathar, Aruna S, Sanjay Bhangar and Sajjad Anwar created a map which highlights the inundated roads in Chennai. Users can report a flooded street by zooming into the map and clicking it. The data on the website application is open for all to use. Image Courtesy: Github[/caption] According to The Economic Times , the map-based project highlighted over 1500 streets that had been flooded in the last 24 hours. Arun Ganesh is quoted as saying, “My friend Aruna Shankarnarayan and I thought of such a map over the weekend as we wanted people to have a real sense of what is happening on the ground. There was no platform that was offering exact details.” Adding to this map-based indexing of waterlogged regions in the city, Google Maps offered a solution by adding ’layers’.
