Not so holy after all: Couple dragged out of guest house, thrashed in Haridwar

Haridwar: A young couple was allegedly dragged out of a guest house in Piran Kaliyar area in Haridwar and beaten by a mob, following which a case was registered against 12 people and two of them were arrested on Wednesday. According to a report in Times of India, the couple were harassed and beaten up to “keep the reputation of the holy town of Piran Kaliyar in Haridwar district intact”. PTI[/caption] The incident occurred on 16 September but police swung into action on Wednesday after a video of the incident went viral on social media sites on Tuesday. Station in-charge, Piran Kaliyar police station, Rajiv Rauthan said that around 12 people, including Sanwar, Nafroz, Sajad and Mahroom have been booked in this connection. Out of the 12, two have been arrested, an official at Roorkee Civil Lines police station said. The police action is based on a video which went viral recently showing a mob attacking a young couple near the dargah, he said. The video showed a young couple being dragged out of a guest house in Piran Kaliyar by a mob which abuses them and beats them up while they pleaded with it to let them go. The entire act was recorded and uploaded on the mobile messaging app, police said. Meanwhile, locals alleged that some of the guest houses in the holy town are being misused by unwed couples. The couple was taught a lesson because of this, they added. With inputs from PTI
