Despite a slight rise seen in FY 2024 figures, the total number of deportations between 2014 and 2024 remained below 15,000. On the other hand, nearly 30,000 people were deported from India between 2010 and 2013 alone

The number of foreigners deported from India saw a rise in the Financial Year 2024, according to an analysis by Moneycontrol, based on data from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Data shows that Nigerians have topped the list of deportees from India since 2017. In FY 2024, Nigerians accounted for a whopping 63 per cent of total deportations, a rise from 41 per cent in FY 2021.

India deported 2,331 people in total in the previous financial year. Of these people, 1,470 were from Nigeria, 411 were from Bangladesh, and 78 were from Uganda.

On the other hand, just 1,580 people were deported from India in 2019 and 1,731 in 2018.

More deportations seen in the previous decade

The number of deportations has significantly gone down since 2014, the year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in the centre.

Despite a slight rise seen in FY 2024 figures, the total number of deportations between 2014 and 2024 remained below 15,000.

On the other hand, nearly 30,000 people were deported from India between 2010 and 2013 alone.

Notably, before 2014, Bangladeshis topped the list of people deported from India.

In the year 2020, only 258 people were deported, owing to restrictions on cross-border travel induced by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deportations may increase in coming years

Deportations from India may increase with the passage of the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, which was introduced during the Budget session.

Under Section 7, the Bill grants the Central government broad authority over foreign nationals, including:

- Requiring foreigners to enter and exit India only through designated routes, ports, or places under specific conditions.

- Restricting where foreign nationals can stay within India.
