Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called for “meaningful engagement” between India and China on critical trade problems such as market access and non-tariff obstacles.
Sitharaman told CNN-News18 that the government’s top aim in conversations with Beijing is to get more market access for Indian enterprises. She said that there is still more work to be done in areas such as trade discussions, market barriers, and non-tariff constraints.
The finance minister also emphasised that developing a long-term trading partnership with China will take time and asked for “sincere engagement” from both sides.
Sitharaman explained that the Atmanirbhar Bharat project is about more than just manufacturing things locally; it is also about maintaining self-respect in the face of unpredictable global trade dynamics.
