Infosys founder Narayana Murthy has yet again stoked frustrations among the working class with his views on India’s work culture.
After triggering outrage over his views that young workers must put in at least 70 hours a week, Murthy has now said that he does not agree with five-day workweek and prefers a six-day workweek.
In a conversation with CNBC-TV18 Managing Editor Shereen Bhan, Murthy said that he does not believe in work-life balance.
“I don’t believe in work-life balance… I have not changed my view; I will take this with me to my grave,” said Murthy at the CNBC-TV18’s Global Leadership Summit in Mumbai on Thursday (November 14).
Murthy further said that he was not happy when companies moved to five-day workweek in 1986.
“I was not very happy with that. I think in this country, we have to work very hard because there is no substitute for hard work even if you’re the most intelligent guy,” said Murthy.
Speaking to Bhan about his own routine, Murthi said that he used to go to the office at 6:20 am every day and return at 8:30 pm. He said that he used to have such a 14-hour work-day for 6.5 days a week till he retired and that he remains very proud of it.
