After implementing the e challan system in January, 2017, the Mumbai traffic police has more new rules. On 10 March, Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of police (traffic), issued instructions to the traffic police against demanding documents such as Pollution Under Control, insurance papers and green tax papers. Now motorists don’t have to produce documents that were not issued by the Regional Transport Office. This means traffic policemen can only ask for your driving licence and registration papers. This is part of the Mumbai traffic police to set up an ’evidence-based’ policing system to prevent arguments between policemen and road rule offenders. In this regard, the traffic police department had already installed CCTVs at most of the vital spots, introduced e-challan and launched a mobile application for commuters to register their grievances and seek help. “The aim was to avoid confrontation between the traffic rule offender and the policeman. Whatever is the violation, it is presented with an evidence. This lessens the chances of argument and dispute,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Milind Bharambe had said. He had said that after a traffic rule offender is identified, an SMS is sent on his mobile phone. The road rule violation by a person along with the date and time is also captured on the CCTV. Thus there is less chance of a dispute.
