Mumbai: Parents of 23-year-old Preeti Rathi, who died in Mumbai on 1 June following an acid attack, have finally agreed to cremate her. Initially, her grieving parents refused to perform the last rites demanding that police arrest her assailant first. Rathi, a nursing graduate from Delhi, was attacked with acid by an unidentified assailant on May 2 moments after she had alighted from the Garib Rath train at the Bandra station. Rathi, who had initially shown signs of recovery and had even communicated through writing, lost an eye due to the attack. Later her lungs had collapsed due to the holes that formed following the attack and eventually she died from multiple organ failure. “Doctors removed the ventilator and other medical aids, which kept her alive, around 4 pm,” Amar Singh Rathi, the victim’s father, told IANS. Preeti was supposed to start her first job as a nurse at the Navy hospital in Mumbai. NDTV reports:
The Railway Police, who have been investigating the case so far, have not been able to track down Preeti’s attackers. The attack happened on a bustling railway platform which has at least a dozen cameras. The Bandra Terminus also has a full-fledged railway police outpost. Yet, the attackers escaped.
The victim’s family had met Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil yesterday and demanded a CBI probe.
