MPs across party lines submit notice to impeach Justice Yashwant Varma over cash discovery

A multipartisan group of lawmakers have submitted a notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to impeach Justice Yashwant Varma in the cash discovery case.

A total of 145 MPs from both the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Opposition’s INDIA bloc on Monday submitted the notice to Birla.

Some of the notable MPs who signed the notice include Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP KC Venugopal, Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) MP Surpiya Sule and Anurag Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, and Rajiv Pratap Rudy of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Separately, 63 Opposition MPs submitted on Monday submitted a notice to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar for the impeachment of Varma.

Members of Parliament today submitted a memorandum to the Lok Sabha Speaker to remove Justice Yashwant Varma. 145 Lok Sabha members signed the impeachment motion against Justice Verma under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution.

On March 14, after a fire broke out at Varma’s official residence in Delhi, firefighters who doused the fire discovered bundles of cash in a storeroom in the house. After the police brought the matter to then-Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna’s attention, he appointed a panel of judges for an in-house investigation. The panel concluded that the cash was indeed discovered at Varma’s residence.

In recent weeks, calls had been made for Varma's impeachment and there had been reports in the media that the Monsoon session starting today would see the beginning of the impeachment process.

Under Article 124 (4) of the Constitution, a judge of a high court or the Supreme Court can be removed after a majority of both the houses and at least two-thirds of the members present in the house at the time vote for their removal.

As parties across the aisle have joined hands in the matter, any impeachment is expected to sail smoothly in the case of Varma.

Varma was a judge at the Delhi High Court at the time of the discovery of cash at his residence. The Supreme Court later transferred him to Allahabad High Court. The Supreme Court, however, notified that no work will be assigned to Varma for the time being.
