More shame in JNU: Girl attacked, molested on campus by former student

New Delhi: In the second such incident in less than a week, a 20-year-old Spanish language student of the Jawaharlal Nehru University was attacked and molested inside the university campus allegedly by a former student of the institute. Police said the girl, a student of the School of Languages, was molested and slapped inside the campus by her friend Abhinendra Jain last evening with whom she was in a relationship. Jain, 24, was arrested today and a case under sections 354 (assault or use of criminal force against women with intent to outrage her modesty) and 506 (criminal intimidation) was registered against him. The victim told police that she was in a relationship with Jain. He had told her not to talk to other men. When she did not listen to him, he attacked and molested her, police said. “Jain, a resident of Bihar, is an ex-student of the university. Last evening, he called the girl asking her to meet him. When the girl came to meet him, he attacked her, slapped her and molested her in full public view. The girl was staying in a hostel in the JNU campus,” said a senior police officer. Screengrab of IBN-Live video.[/caption] He said the girl is a student of School of Language where she was studying Spanish. The attack came five days after JNU student, Roshni, was allegedly attacked by her 23-year old friend Akash with an axe. Akash had allegedly hit her head with the axe before consuming poison and slitting his throat. He died in the AIIMS trauma centre a few hours after the incident while Roshni is recuperating at Safdurjung Hospital. Expressing concern over the incident, JNU Vice Chancellor S K Sopory said no such incident will be tolerated and remedial measures will be put in place. “I got to know about the incident this evening and have asked the Chief Proctor to give me a detailed report in the matter tomorrow. No such anti-social elements will be tolerated nor such incident will be allowed to go unaddressed,” he told PTI. “Whenever we get to know about such incidents, we immediately take action. The gender sensitisation committee and the university are conducting several student meetings to address the issue. I reiterate that no such incidents will be tolerated in JNU,” he said. Ayesha Kidwai, faculty Representative JNU’s Gender Sensitisation Committee on Sexual Harassment, claimed the girl had narrated the incident at a student meeting last evening, following which a complaint was filed with the police at around 11.30 PM. “The girl is fine and there is no threat to her. We would like to say that though the case needs to be reported, it should also be noted that JNU was prompt in its action. JNU is being wrongly portrayed as a lawless institution. The fact that the girl narrated the incident in front of an audience of students and nobody doubted her shows the degree of confidence students have in JNU,” Kidwai said. PTI
