Prime Minister Narendra Modi today recalled the message of peace and welfare of Lord Mahavir on his Jayanti. “On Mahavir Jayanti I bow to the venerable Lord Mahavir, who showed the path of peace and welfare for entire humanity,” the Prime Minister tweeted this morning.
His tweet also carried a picture of Lord Mahavir sitting in ‘samadhi’. Lord Mahavir was the 24th and the last Tirthankara of the Jain religion. According to Jain texts, Mahavira was born in 599 BCE. Some historians identify Mahavira as a junior contemporary of Gautama Buddha, leaving his year of birth ambiguous, but most of the historians and Jain followers agree that Mahavira was born in 599 BCE and place his date of birth on the thirteenth day of the rising moon of Chaitra in the Vira Nirvana Samvat calendar.
