'Misconstrued': Ex-IPL boss Lalit Modi apologises to Indian govt over viral video with Vijay Mallya
Lalit Modi had founded the Indian Premier League in 2008 and served as chairman for the first three seasons. AFP

Days after the Ministry of External Affairs said that India would work to bring back all the fugitives abroad, former Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman Lalit Modi issued an apology over a controversial video. Modi, who fled the country, released a statement on Monday apologising for his recent social media posts.

In a message on X, formerly known as Twitter, Modi said that he did not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings, especially those of the Indian government. He also maintained that he holds the government of India in high regard, and his statements circulating online were misunderstood.

I apologise if I have hurt anyone feelings especially the Indian Government who I have the highest respect and regard for. The statement was misconstrued and was never intended to be as played out. Once again my deepest apologies

Modi maintained that his post was never meant to be taken in the way it was portrayed and offered his “deepest apologies". “I apologise if I have hurt anyone’s feelings, especially the Indian Government, for whom I have the highest respect and regard. The statement was misconstrued and was never intended to be as played out. Once again, my deepest apologies,” he wrote.

Why is Lalit Modi apologising

It is pertinent to note that Modi’s apology came following a controversial video involving Lalit Modi and Kingfisher supremo Vijay Mallya.

Last week, the two Indian businessmen appeared together in the video recorded at Mallya’s birthday party. In the now-viral clip,  Lalit Modi introduced himself and Mallya as “the two biggest fugitives of India".

The video was shared on Instagram by Lalit Modi himself with the caption that read, “Let’s break the internet down in India again. Happy birthday, my friend #VijayMallya. Love u." The post eventually triggered a strong reaction online, with many users accusing the two of mocking the Indian justice system.
