Meghani Nagar: How the Air India crash affected Ahmedabad’s medical college and residential area

Tragedy rocked India on Thursday after an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft bound for London from Ahmedabad crashed in the Meghani Nagar area . The aircraft was carrying 242 passengers, with confirmation on the casualties still pending. In the videos that are circulating online, thick smoke was seen rising from within the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport premises.

Soon after the crash, Air India issued a statement, stating that it was gathering information about the crash. “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on http://airindia.com and on our X handle,” the airline company said in the statement.

If one goes by Google Maps, a trip from Meghani Nagar to Ahmedabad Airport takes merely 3 mins, with the area being just 2 kilometres away by car.

According to the GeoIQ report, the area has a population of around 25,801. Out of them, around 12,200 are women and 13,500 are men, who are living in an area roughly 1.07 square kilometres in size.

Shortly after the incident, a civil hospital close to the airport declared an emergency to ensure that those injured in the crash would receive prompt medical attention. In light of this, all physicians’ holidays have been cancelled.

The authorities are also conducting an evacuation process at the hostel mess of the BJ Medical College, where the aircraft directly hit when plunging soon after takeoff.
