Also, EAC-PM report pointed out that Gujarat’s per capita incom compared to the national average is higher than that of Maharashtra’s.

“Maharashtra’s economic performance has remained steady throughout the period (1960-61 to 2023-24) despite a slight decline in its share over the last decade. Nevertheless, it continues to hold the highest share among all the states,” the paper, titled Relative Economic Performance of Indian States: 1960-61 to 2023-24, authored by economist Sanjeev Sanyal, member of the EAC-PM, and its joint director Aakanksha Arora, said.

The paper analysed data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

As for Gujarat, the paper said that the state’s share in national GDP remained broadly at the same levels between 1960-61 and 2000-2001, before starting to increase rapidly.

The report further said that the western and southern regions of India have performed notably better than other parts of the country. Also, the southern states have significantly outpaced others after economic liberalisation, with the five states collectively accounting for approximately 30 per cent of India’s GDP.

It also stated that the eastern part of the country remains a concern. West Bengal has experienced a continuous decline in its relative economic performance over several decades.

“Although Bihar’s relative position has stabilised in the last two decades, it remains significantly behind other states and requires much faster growth to catch up. Conversely, Odisha, traditionally a laggard, has shown marked improvement in recent years. Overall, maritime states have clearly outperformed the other states, with the exception of West Bengal,” it noted.
