Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Friday said it has transferred Rs 392 crore in farmers’ accounts in 11 banks under the farm loan waiver scheme. Reuters[/caption] The government announced the Rs 34,000 crore loan waiver scheme in June this year. “A total of Rs 899 crore have been transferred to the Cooperation Department. Out of it, Rs 392 crore have been transferred to farmers’ bank accounts,” said an officer in the chief minister’s office. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Friday said it will organise a state-wide agitation against the “inefficient” BJP-led Maharashtra government from 30 October to 8 November. The state NCP chief Sunil Tatkare said the farm loan waiver announced by the government has been a complete failure. “The government has fooled farmers. We had thought the farmers will have a happy Diwali this year, but their festival passed in darkness,” the NCP leader said. The state government recently asked the banks to use their own funds to settle farmers’ loans and promised them a reimbursement “as soon as possible”. However, the banks say that it would be hard for them to sustain until they get back their money.
