Mahakumbh 2025: Uttar Pradesh govt races against time to give Prayagraj a facelift

With Mahakumbh 2025 just days away, Prayagraj has got a massive makeover to cater to the needs of the 40 crore devotees and observers from across the world. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has unveiled a number of infrastructural projects to attract visitors to the pilgrimage destination during the Mahakumbh Mela to be held in January.

The central government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party has allocated Rs 5,435 for organising next year’s Mahakumbh in Prayagraj. The money will be used to fund over 400 projects in the city.

“Our vision is to create an unforgettable spiritual experience supported by world-class infrastructure. The journey to Prayagraj should be as divine and seamless as the spiritual experience awaiting devotees at the Sangam,” Adityanath said recently.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also inaugurated development projects worth Rs 5,500 crore. The projects are aimed at streamlining amenities for participants of Mahakumbh and giving a boost to the city’s infrastructure.

As part of the beautification initiative, streets, intersections, and walls are being transformed with artwork inspired by the mythology of Kumbh, reflecting the spirit and grandeur of this significant spiritual event.

Public parks are also being given a facelift to enhance the experience of visitors and devotees and turn them into recreational spaces for them.

The beautification project will feature the addition of rose gardens, taverns, and rockeries. To make the parks more inviting in the evenings, modern lighting systems will be installed, including bollard lights, LED string lights, solar decorative lights, and LED rope lights.

The city will see the installation of hundreds of pillars, green belts, horticultural enhancements, and thematic designs, all highlighting the richness of Sanatan traditions. Furthermore, plans are being made to leave visitors mesmerized by the city’s grandeur, steeped in religious devotion.

Recognised by UNESCO as an ‘Intangible cultural heritage of humanity’, the Mahakumbh is being celebrated after a gap of 12 years at the confluence of the sacred rivers Ganga and Yamuna. According to religious legend, the invisible sacred river Saraswati also converges here. Hence the confluence is called ‘Triveni Sangam’.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is scheduled to take place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 26, 2025.
