Mahakumbh 2025: An ancient tradition that showcases Indian culture dipped in religious fervour

The Maha Kumbh Mela, a vibrant and sacred event deeply rooted in Hindu mythology is all set to take place in 2025 at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

This grand festival considered the largest public gathering in the world, draws millions of pilgrims, ascetics, saints, sadhus and devotees from all corners of India and from across the world.

The festival is celebrated every 12 years and rotates between four revered locations: Haridwar on the banks of the Ganges, Ujjain by the Shipra River, Nashik by the Godavari, and Prayagraj, where the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Sarasvati river forms the focal point of this spiritual gathering.

The Kumbh Mela’s importance lies not just in its sheer scale, but in its spiritual and astrological precision. The timing of the event is determined by the alignment of the Sun, Moon and Jupiter which is considered to be the holiest in Hinduism.

It is during this auspicious period that millions gather to take part in sacred rituals, particularly the famous ‘Shahi Snaan’ (royal bath), believed to cleanse one’s soul and absolve sins.

Among the most fascinating aspects of the Kumbh Mela are the various processions that take place, such as the ‘Peshwai’ – a ceremonial parade featuring Akharas, the traditional warrior groups of ascetics, on elephant backs, chariots, and horses. The Naga Sadhus, known for their distinctive rituals and fiery rituals, march with shining swords, adding to the grandeur and spectacle of the Mela.
