Maha Kumbh concludes as sea of devotees flock for final 'snan' on Mahashivratri

Thousands of devotees gathered at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj early on Wednesday for the final ‘Snan’ of the Maha Kumbh, as the month long cultural event comes to an end. The final ‘snan’ was also coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri.

Thousands of devotees gathered at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj early on Wednesday for the final ‘Snan’ of the Maha Kumbh.

The last day of the Maha Kumbh coincides with the sacred occasion of Maha Shivaratri.

Drone visuals showed a sea of devotees at the Triveni Sangam taking a holy dip on the last day of the Maha Kumbh.

A huge crowd of devotees gathered at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati, a holy site for Hindus.

According to government data, by 2 am today, over 11.66 lakh devotees had taken a dip at the Sangam. This number rose to 25.64 lakh by 4 am and nearly doubled to 41.11 lakh by 6 am.

10 million to take holy dip today

More than one crore (10 million) devotees are expected to visit the Sangam and take a holy dip today, marking the conclusion of the 2025 Maha Kumbh.

The first Amrit Snan of Paush Purnima took place on 13 January, followed by Snans on Makar Sankranti (14 January), Mauni Amavasya (29 January), Basant Panchami (3 February), Maghi Purnima (12 February), and the final Snan on Maha Shivaratri (26 February).

Several Akharas joined the Maha Kumbh, including Niranjani Akhada, Ahwan Akhada, and Juna Akhada, the largest in the Sanyasi tradition.

Prayagraj administration is prepared: DM

In response to the massive number of devotees expected at the Maha Kumbh, the Prayagraj district administration has deployed additional forces and ensured better coordination with railway and airport authorities for improved management.

Prayagraj District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar emphasised efforts to manage traffic and parking efficiently, ensuring a hassle-free experience for devotees.

Maha Shivaratri, also called the great night of Shiva, is a sacred Hindu festival. It also celebrates the divine marriage of Lord Shiva, the god of destruction, with Goddess Parvati. This year, the festival coincides with the final day of the Maha Kumbh.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in a post on X, said, “More than 1.30 crore devotees today and over 63.36 crore devotees so far have taken a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam at Maha Kumbh-2025, Prayagraj, a living symbol of India’s faith and Sanatan’s harmony. The festival of humanity. Hearty congratulations to all revered saints and devotees who received the holy benefit of the sacred bath today in this ‘Mahayagna’ of unity! Hail Mother Ganga!”
