“Everything is under control,” assured Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, saying he has been in constant touch with the administration at Mahakal Temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain where 13 priests were injured in a fire that broke out during ‘bhasma aarti’ on Monday during Holi festivities.

The blaze took place in the ‘garba griha’ (sanctum sanctorum) of the temple, Ujjain Collector Neeraj Kumar Singh said.

“The incident of fire at the ‘garba griha’ of Mahakal Temple during ‘bhasma aarti’ is unfortunate. I have been in touch with the administration since morning. Everything is under control. I pray to Baba Mahakal for the quick recovery of all injured,” the Chief Minister said in a post on X.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with CM Mohan Yadav and took information regarding the incident of fire in Mahakal temple.

“The local administration is providing all help and treatment available to the injured,” Shah said in a post on X.

“Thirteen priests suffered burn injuries and are being treated in the district hospital here. A magisterial probe has been ordered,” Collector Neeraj Kumar Singh said.

How fire broke out in Ujjain’s Mahakal Temple?

A report by PTI quoted eyewitnesses saying the fire broke out while ‘gulal’ (coloured powder used during rituals ands Holi) was being thrown as part of a religious ceremony.

“The fire suddenly flared up during ‘bhasma aarti’ when ‘gulal’ was being offered to Mahakal. A cover was placed in the sanctum sanctorum due to ‘dhulendi’, which caught fire and fell on the priests and devotees,” a report by India Today quoted priest Aashish Pujari as saying
